Nurses needed for UCLH's leading neonatal unit

The Neonatal Unit is recruiting more nurses to care for babies who are newly born and sick or premature.

Our neonatal service is a recognised centre of excellence and takes referrals for acutely ill and pre-term babies from across north and central London and beyond. These babies are cared for by specialist teams of nurses and doctors.

The UCLH neonatal service provides integrated care with Great Ormond Street Hospital for babies needing surgery or the specialist support of other experts.

We have 25 neonatal intensive/high-dependency and eight special care cots in light and spacious surroundings designed to promote emotional as well as physical well-being.

In addition, the neonatal team continues to provide transitional care service allowing babies to remain with their mothers if special care is required after birth, supported by a multidisciplinary team.

Neonatal consultant Judith Meek, who first joined UCLH 25 years ago, says she and the whole team “absolutely love babies - well, most people do, don’t they?” But she was initially attracted to neonatal medicine because of its holistic nature.

“Most areas of medicine are specialised but with tiny babies you have to look after the whole human. You have to know how their organs interact; you experience the adrenalin rush of emergencies and
the intellectual challenge of textbook physiology, as well as coping with the emotional aspects.”

The neonatal team is geared to respond to any of the number of conditions that can affect a newborn baby. Neonatal nurses also have an important role in supporting the family of the baby at a time when parents can be anxious and stressed. As far as possible, the parents and sometimes other family members are encouraged to take an active role in the care of the baby.

The videos below show some of our current neonatal nurses speaking about what makes their job so rewarding and the support and encouragement they get from their colleagues in the team.
