One of our longest-serving members of staff has been awarded an OBE for outstanding contribution to tropical medicine.

Professor Peter Chiodini, who joined the Hospital for Tropical Diseases 33 years ago, was recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his services to parasitology and malaria.

Professor Chiodini is consultant parasitologist at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases (part of UCLH), an honorary professor at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, an honorary clinical professor at UCL and director of the Public Health England (PHE) Malaria Reference Laboratory and the PHE National Parasitology Reference Laboratory.

Other roles include being a member of the Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens; PHE’s Advisory Committee on Malaria Prevention in Travellers; and advising the National Blood Service on the prevention of parasitic infections.

He is particularly proud of his work to improve the standard of diagnostic parasitology via external quality assessment and his role in the World Health Organization and Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics Product Testing Programme for Malaria Rapid Diagnostic Tests which has helped ensure the provision of quality diagnostics in the tropics.

The professor said his honour illustrates “social mobility in action” and told how he hopes it will inspire youngsters in a similar position today to aim high.

He said: “I came from a very ordinary background. My father was the son of a migrant to the UK and worked as a machine operator, whilst my mother was an assistant cook.”

“There is still much to do to improve opportunity and social mobility, so I hope my honour will help encourage that process.”

Professor Marcel Levi, UCLH’s chief executive, said: “I am delighted to hear that Professor Chiodini’s fantastic contribution to tropical medicine has been recognised and rewarded at the highest level.

“We are incredibly lucky to have him at UCLH and I am sure everyone here will want to join me in congratulating him.”
