A ceremony has been held this week to mark the official opening of the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Cleveland Street.

Built on the site of the old Middlesex Hospital, the centre is home to the pain management centre and provides some multiple sclerosis and prion outpatient care.

Sir Robert Naylor, chief executive and Richard Murley, chairman of UCLH cut the ribbon and declared the centre open.

Richard Murley said: “Around 14 million people experience pain in England and it is a significant reason why people are admitted to hospital. I am delighted that we now have this purpose-designed facility where we can work to help people manage chronic pain and which will make it easier for patients to get the help they need all in in one location.”

After the ceremony, there was a reception in the Fitzrovia Chapel, which was part of the old Middlesex Hospital.

Sir Robert Naylor reflected: “The sale of the Middlesex Hospital enabled us to develop University College Hospital, which was the start of our vision for a world leading specialist hospital.

“The Middlesex Hospital had an extremely strong reputation and I am proud that we have built on that, with UCLH, and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery considered to be amongst the best. This development at Cleveland Street helps us to continue to grow and improve. It enables us to develop our pain service, but also enables improvements to the National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery, to support our brain tumour and surgical services.”

As well as opening a new facility, UCLH is celebrating the launch of the new integrated complex pain service for inpatients.
Natasha Curran, the consultant who leads the service said “Many patients experience pain whilst in hospital. Our new complex pain service will work with them to treat and manage their pain and ensure they have the right support when they go home. We are extremely grateful to the UCLH Charity and Camden Clinical Commissioning Group who are funding this service.”
