Staff who will be working in the new Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health (ISEH) when it opens in May are practising what they preach by putting on their trainers for a 5km fun run.

The team, led by orthopaedic surgeon Professor Fares Haddad, is on a mission to prove that exercise really is the best medicine.   He is launching a new charity, ‘Exercise for Health’ to encourage everyone to do more exercise so that they can reap the health benefits that more physical activity can bring.

“We want to open up exercise to everyone and encourage people to get moving.  Exercise can improve general health, especially cardiac disease, diabetes, renal disease, respiratory disease and osteo-arthritis.  It can also prevent ill health from getting worse.  We want to spread the word.”

“We want to encourage people to join us on the fun run You don’t have to run, you can walk or jog the 5km on your own, with your team (maximum number of people per team is ten), or with your family.  With a little training, a 5km run is a reasonable, achievable distance for most people”.

As an added incentive there will be a prize for the first three men, women and under 13s - boys and girls - to finish.  There will also be a team prize – each team will get a score based on the finishing positions of its first five runners (maximum ten per team). The team with the best score will be awarded a prize.

The run will take place on a fully signposted, marshalled course on Sunday 23 June at 9.30am in Regent’s Park.   After the race, participants are invited for free refreshments and weather permitting, more fun and games in the park.

Click here to enter the race. Registration is £10 per person to cover costs, sponsorship to raise money for the charity is encouraged but not compulsory – it really is the taking part that counts.
