Praise for our emergency department

Our emergency department has been shown to be the best of its kind for overall patient experience in London.

UCLH achieved an overall experience score of 8.4 out of 10 in the national Emergency Department patient experience survey –the highest for any London acute teaching hospital and the highest within the Shelford Group. The Shelford Group is considered to be a group of the best 16 hospitals in the country.

The survey was completed by 215 people who had attended the Emergency Department at UCLH in September 2016. They later completed the postal survey about their experiences. The findings have now been analysed by the Care Quality Commission and published this week (17 October).

Our areas of best performance placed us as better than other Trusts in feeling the doctor or nurse listened to what they had to say and feeling the doctor or nurse discussed any anxieties or fears they had about their condition or treatment.

Timely pain relief is highlighted as an area of focus which is consistent with national challenges.

The Emergency Department team has worked closely with the Pain team since the survey was done last year to improve patient care in relation to pain. For example, the Emergency Department team has introduced a monthly pain survey for patients to help inform ongoing improvement of car

Further analysis of the results is being carried out and we are continuing to look for areas of best practice to learn from other trusts.
