Quality mark for Macmillan Support and Information Service

Welcoming, accessible, respecting privacy and dignity: just some of the accolades given to the Macmillan Support and Information Service (MSIS) which was recently awarded a Macmillan Quality Environment Mark (MQEM).

The MSIS, based in the University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre provides advice, information and support to patients, carers, families or anyone who is affected by cancer. This ranges from advice about benefits, to managing side effects, to talking to loved ones about their diagnosis. The Service also runs a programme of classes, such as yoga, fighting fatigue workshops and creative word. It is run by UCLH with additional funding from the UCH Cancer Fund and Haematology Cancer Care.

We will continue to involve service users in developing the space we provide for them.

The Service was recently awarded the Macmillan Quality Environment Mark (MQEM) by Macmillan Cancer Support. This award recognises the quality of the environment in which people can access information and support. As well as being welcoming, the team of assessors also noted that the environment was comfortable and offered choice to patients. The MSIS was also praised for involving people who use the service to have a say in how it runs, and how it can develop further, through surveys and focus groups.

Siobhan Cowan-Dickie, the Macmillan Patient Information Specialist who led on the MQEM, said: “We are really pleased to have been awarded the MQEM in recognition of the environment we provide for cancer and red cell patents, and their families. We will continue to involve service users in developing the space we provide for them.”
