Showcasing our clinical trials

18/05/2016 00:00
UCLH will be celebrating International Clinical Trials Day on Friday 20 May with information stalls, tours and activities across UCLH.

Patients and public can find out more about clinical research projects and trials at UCLH, including how they can get involved.

The event marks the tenth birthday of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), the government body that coordinates and funds research for the NHS.

It is also a chance to meet our clinical trial practitioners (CTPs) who will be wearing their new uniform for the first time. CTPs coordinate the care of patients taking part in a clinical trial and are the key contact for the patient and their family, providing clear information about the study protocol and arranging all the investigations and visits which are required.

They are not nurses and usually come from a science background and are a valuable part of a research team that ensures patient care on clinical trials is of the highest standard.

Here are some of the events taking place:

  • Visitors can try their hand at research experiments and games and find out how they can be actively involved in designing research projects. You can also meet our clinical trial practitioners. University College Hospital 2-4pm, Ground floor atrium.
  • Tour the facility and meet clinical research staff. Key note speakers include Dr Vincenzo Libri, head of the Leonard Wolfson Experimental Neurology Centre (LWENC) who will give an overview of the facility and Sarah Ezekiel who will talk about a patient's perspective of clinical research. Leonard Wolfson Experimental Neurology Centre (LWENC), 12-4pm, Ground Floor, Albany Wing, NHNN
  • Try a hearing loss and cochlear implant simulator,  take part in quizzes about ear research and suggest what you would like researchers to investigate. Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital 9.30am-1pm and 1.45-4.30pm in the Nuffield paediatric waiting area.
  • Find out about clinical trials at the Eastman Dental Hospital, 12-2pm, Palm Court.

This year the message is: it is “OK to ask” about clinical research. This campaign, led by the NIHR, encourages patients to ask their doctor, nurse or consultant about research opportunities available to them.
