Sir Robert Naylor to step down as chief executive

UCLH chairman Richard Murley has today announced that Sir Robert Naylor will be stepping down from his role as UCLH chief executive on 31 March 2016 to develop new career opportunities.

Richard Murley said: "On behalf of UCLH's board, staff and patients I would like to thank Robert for the enormous amount which he has done for the hospital during 15 years of outstanding leadership. We are truly fortunate to have been able to benefit from his exceptional strategic vision, wisdom, drive and flair. We will be very sad to lose Robert and wish him every success with his future plans."

Sir Robert was appointed chief executive at UCLH in November 2000 and this year will complete 15 years in the role. Previously he was chief executive at Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust in Birmingham for a similar period from 1985. He joined the NHS in 1972 as a graduate trainee.

He has led or been involved in numerous national and regional initiatives over four decades and received a Knighthood in the Queen's New Year Honours in December 2008 in recognition of his services to the NHS.

Sir Robert has decided to step down at this time to develop other opportunities and commercial interests. It also gives time for the chairman to identify a successor and support the transition of a new chief executive before the end of his tenure.

Sir Robert Naylor said: "It has been a great honour to have overseen the sustained development of UCLH which, in partnerships including UCL, is now recognised as one of the leading academic medical centres in the world.

"I pay tribute to the outstanding clinical and managerial professionals that I have been privileged to have worked with. I'm proud of you all and wish you every success in the future.

"When I came here I planned to stay for five years to see through the first phase of the new University College Hospital - 15 years later we are up to phase 5 and the completion of a university/hospital campus of which we can all be proud. It's been a wonderful journey and a legacy for future generations."

UCLH has now started the search for a successor which will be advertised shortly with interviews scheduled for late November.
