Step back in time

Where in University College Hospital can you find an old fashioned wireless and TV set, a 1950's newspaper about the Queen’s Coronation, ration books and recipes for spam fritters? The answer lies in a walk-in time capsule in the heart of T7 ward.

Matron Josie Gladney and Ward Sisters Rebecca Maud and Sharon Lynagh created the yesteryear haven in a disused bathroom to make hospital life more comfortable for elderly patients and those with dementia.

Officially opened to mark National Dementia Awareness Week, it offers a less clinical, homely place to sit for those patients who find life on the ward stressful and confusing.

Rebecca said: "We will encourage staff to spend time with patients in the reminiscence room. We hope that by talking about previous life experiences, families and jobs it will help develop meaningful relationships between staff and patients, helping to reduce anxiety and ensure a more comfortable hospital stay for our patients."

Josie said: “I think it’s a great way for staff to find out something about their patients that helps them to provide care in a very person-centred way.”

The items were sourced via a company specialising in retro items. PS. The wireless is actually a cleverly disguised MP3 player, the TV set plays DVDs! Josie made the 50 cakes at home, complete with the ‘forget-me-not’ emblem.
