However, the modest winner of the Nursing Standard’s competition was reluctant to take the spotlight!

David said: “It was a surprise to be nominated, a surprise to be short-listed and certainly a nice surprise to have won. However, I did not do this on my own. I may have co-ordinated the work but it was my team colleagues who made it possible.  The other team members, Helen Keane, Nancy Huntley, Pippa Wellard, and Daniel Putensen, should also be congratulated.”

He and his colleagues from the UCLH haematology department provide a 24/7 on call service for young patients at Great Ormond Street Hospital who would benefit from apheresis therapy.

The therapy involves passing blood through an apparatus which can separate the blood components, which can then be either removed, or exchanged for donated blood components.  For example, before undergoing chemotherapy the therapy can reduce the high number of white cells in the blood of a young leukaemia patient, thereby reducing the risk of complications when the chemotherapy is given.

David, who won the child health category, was nominated by lead cancer nurse Stephen Rowley.

He was among 21 finalists chosen by the panel of nursing experts for their inspirational commitment to improving the lives of their patients. Chair of the judging panel was Andrea Spryopolous, President of the Royal College of Nursing.
