There can’t be many 12 year olds who put a visit to hospital as top of their birthday wish list. But that’s exactly what Lauren Butcher asked for.

Lauren, who has set her heart on becoming a paediatrician when she is older, wanted to tour a children’s ward and A&E and speak to staff.

Her mother wrote to the Trust communications unit and thanks to paediatric consultant Dr Jo Begent her wish was granted.

Lauren's clinical ambitions stem from visiting her nan at UCH following a hip replacement operation.

Lauren, who lives in Camden, said: “I also spent my 7th birthday at UCH when I felt unwell and it wasn’t horrible at all. All the nurses and doctors talked to me so that I could understand them. I think I would be a good doctor. I don’t like to see people ill and like to help them. One day I would like to work at UCH.”

During the mini tour she chatted to staff, viewed her own clinical records on-line, tried wrapping bandages and enjoyed a demonstration of monitoring equipment.

She added:” I really liked it!”

At home, Lauren has an extensive first aid kit including stethoscope, oxygen mask and neurological hammer. She also has a skeleton named Arthur! Lauren has recently joined St Johns Ambulance which she really enjoys.

Her mother Tracy said: “I would like to thank Jo and all the staff involved who made this visit possible.”
