UCLH on Text Santa

18/12/2014 00:00
Watch the telethon "Text Santa" on ITV tomorrow (Friday 19 December 2014) and you could catch a glimpse of some of our patients and staff on the Teenage Cancer Trust wards at University College Hospital and the Macmillan Cancer Centre.

Presenters Ant and Dec came to UCLH in September to record a segment for the show which airs on ITV1 tomorrow between 8pm and 11.20pm. the highlights are repeated immediately afterwards, ie between 00.05am and 1.25am on Saturday.

In the first hour, viewers will see Ant & Dec visit a patient called Luke who has just completed his treatment for cancer on the inpatient and outpatient wards at University College Hospital.

Consultant Nurse for Teenagers and Young Adults with cancer, Wendy King said: "We are delighted that Teenage Cancer Trust were chosen to benefit from this year's fundraising. They have helped us support hundreds of teenagers and young adult patients and we are glad we have been able to help them gain more visibility.

"We know that young people have a much better chance in their fight against cancer if they are treated by teenage cancer experts, in an environment tailored to their needs and so the money raised will help TCT continue this vital work.”

TCT supports two units at University College Hospital. The 19-bed inpatient unit supports young cancer patients aged between 13 and 20 years, allowing them to be treated alongside other young people of a similar age rather than on a children’s ward or adult ward.

The Hub in the Cancer Centre is bright and vibrant, featuring impressive graffiti artwork. There are eight treatment pods, various treatment and consulting rooms and a spacious social area. This includes a gym, DJ booth, computer gaming space, education zone, a family area and cafe.

As well as the state-of-the-art facilities, the teenage and young adult service allows the 800 patients each year to have more control and responsibility for their chemotherapy treatment. Special chemotherapy backpacks which provide treatment on the move give patients greater independence and freedom without having to spend days in hospital.
