The UCLH Governing Body has reappointed Richard Murley as UCLH chairman for another term. It means Richard will be in post until the end of June 2016.

Sir Robert Naylor, UCLH chief executive, said: "I'm delighted at the Governors decision to reappoint Richard for a second term, giving us the opportunity to continue to build top quality patient services for the future."

Richard said: "I thoroughly enjoyed my first three years as chairman of UCLH. This is a fabulous trust with so much to be proud of, not least its hard-working staff. I look forward to working closely with the Trust Board to build on our recent success."

Meanwhile the Governing Body has appointed Professor Sir Alasdair Breckenridge CBE and Dr Rima Makarem to the Trust Board as non-executive directors. They replace Jane Ramsey who stood down in October to become chairman at Cambridge University Hospitals and Dr Sue Atkinson who will stand down in June 2013.

Dr Makarem will start formally on 1 July 2013; Sir Alasdair took up his post on 1 November.

Richard said: "I would like to thank Jane for her years of hard work on behalf of UCLH. The expertise that she has brought to the board helped us maintain our focus to deliver on our objectives. The board is looking forward to working with Sir Alasdair and Rima and I would like to take this opportunity to welcome them to the Trust."

Sir Alasdair is chairman of the MHRA where he has been since 2003 and was previously Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Liverpool. Between 1987 and 1999, he was a member or the chairman of local and regional health authorities in the north-west of England including chairman of the North West Regional Office. Sir Alasdair was recently confirmed as chairman of the Department of Health's newly established Emerging Science and Bioethics Advisory Committee (ESBAC). He has been involved in regulation and governance for many years.

Dr Makarem has been a non-executive director of NHS London since 2007 (she will stand down in 2013) and was previously a non executive director and chairwoman of Audit & Governance for NHS Haringey. She was previously worked for GlaxoSmithKline for six years, where she was latterly director of competitive excellence. Prior to this, she was a management consultant, advising FTSE 100 companies on financial, strategic and operational issues. Dr Makarem holds a PhD in Biochemistry and is also a non-executive director of Anchor Trust.
