UCLH performs well in patient-led assessments (PLACE)

Patients have scored UCLH higher than the national average for the cleanliness, condition, appearance and maintenance of its buildings and their suitability for patients with dementia and disability.

Four of our hospitals were inspected in April – University College Hospital, University College Hospital at Westmoreland Street, the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN) and the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital (RNTNEH) – as part of the national annual patient-led assessments of the care environment (PLACE).

The inspections focussed on the care environment, including the condition of the buildings and the food offered to patients, rather than clinical care.

They were completed by teams made up of patients, carers and governors and members of NHS Improvement and Camden and Islington Healthwatch.

UCLH scored highly in most areas, a result that reflects our commitment to improving the environment our patients are treated in and the experience they have here.

Cleanliness was rated particularly highly rated across the board, with an average score of 99.81 per cent.

While we have made improvements in our food service, we still have more to do – a fact reflected in our score for food being slightly below the national average.

The RNTNEH’s lower scores partly reflect the age of its buildings. However, we will continue to look at ways of improving the facilities ahead of the hospital’s move to a state-of-the art building in Huntley Street next year.

Linda Martin, UCLH’s director of estates and facilities, said: “We are delighted that, once again, we have achieved good PLACE scores.

“There are one or two areas which need attention but I am sure that working with our service partners we can achieve improvements very quickly.

“I’d like to thank our staff and service partners for hard work and dedication in supporting the PLACE assessment again this year.”
