UCLH’s consultant anaesthetist Professor Kevin Fong has been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s 2019 birthday honours.

Kevin received the Order of the British Empire for services to healthcare and medicine.

“I am genuinely shocked but it’s a wonderful surprise,” said Kevin.

“I want to accept this award on behalf of all the people who have driven and encouraged me throughout my life, but particularly my colleagues at UCLH, and most especially my fellow anaesthetists who supported me and my crazy endeavours across the whole of my career as a doctor.”

UCLH chief executive Professor Marcel Levi said: “Professor Fong is a dynamic and engaging individual who is committed to pushing the frontiers of science, technology and medicine. He is an excellent clinician and an inspiring teacher.

“I am sure colleagues across UCLH will join me in congratulating him on receiving this prestigious honour.”

Kevin joined UCLH in 1998 as a junior doctor specialising in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine.

While a medical student he took part in a NASA aerospace medicine training programme and he continues to work regularly with the agency.

He has a degree in astrophysics, a master’s degree in astronautics and space engineering and has contributed to several reviews of UK space policy.

As a science broadcaster for the BBC, Kevin engages audiences in many of the scientific, technological and ethical challenges that face modern medicine.

He is currently a Wellcome Trust public engagement and innovation fellow and a newly appointed professor of public engagement for science, technology and medicine at University College London. In this post, he will continue his efforts to understand risk management and decision making in medicine.
