UCLH scores well in patient survey

12/08/2015 00:00
UCLH has been rated higher than the national average for patient privacy, dignity and wellbeing and the cleanliness, condition and appearance of its hospitals in recent patient-led assessments (PLACE).

Three UCLH hospitals - the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital (RNTNEH) and University College Hospital – were inspected and all performed well on a number of criteria assessed by patients.

The assessments were carried out earlier this year between March and May 2015. Local patients, carers and governors and members of the local Healthwatch went into hospitals as part of teams to assess how the environment supported patient’s privacy and dignity, food, cleanliness and general building maintenance.

Neil Griffiths, UCLH deputy chief executive, said: “These are really encouraging scores and I’m proud of our staff for all of the effort that goes into providing great patient care day in and day out."

UCLH has made improvements across its sites since last year in cleanliness and the condition, appearance and maintenance of buildings. Scores have also risen for patient dignity, although other measures to further improve are being looked at.

A new area to be scored in the 2015 assessments is dementia standards, where all three hospitals did not score as highly as in other areas. UCLH was also slightly lower than average for food.

“The new dementia standards, which apply to all areas of our hospitals except maternity and paediatric services, are challenging and require changes to buildings that we will give consideration to," said Neil. "In the meantime we will of course look at these scores in detail and make changes wherever possible.”
