UCLH welcomes new deputy chief executive

06/06/2014 00:00
Meet Neil Griffiths, UCLH’s new deputy chief executive who started work this week.

Following a comprehensive recruitment process, UCLH appointed Neil to the role in April.

He returns to UCLH where he worked from 2003 to 2008, including as director of strategic development.

He re-joins UCLH from his position as a senior expert in the healthcare team at management consulting firm McKinsey. Neil helped create and develop the McKinsey Hospital Institute (MHI) in the UK which supports hospitals with the delivery of change and productivity programmes together with developing management capability.
Neil said: “I am delighted to be returning to UCLH as deputy chief executive. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here and am looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead as foundation trusts like UCLH look to maintain and enhance their services against a backdrop of significantly reduced funding.
“UCLH has a strong reputation for delivering top quality patient care and my role will be to focus on developing services that are more efficient but at the same time more accessible and responsive to patients’ needs.”
Sir Robert Naylor, UCLH chief executive said: “Neil brings with him a solid NHS background and commercial experience most recently, with McKinsey, working with acute trusts on improvement and transformational change.   He will be a valuable member of the executive board.”

Neil has extensive practical hospital management experience gained over 18 years in a number of hospital operational and strategic roles before joining McKinsey.
Neil replaces Mike Foster who had been deputy chief executive at UCLH since 2007. Mike retired from his full-time role to enable him to spend more time with his family however he will be staying with UCLH on a part time basis as director of commissioning.

Sir Robert added: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mike for the fantastic work he has done during his time as deputy chief executive. Mike has a long association with UCLH – he was our finance director before becoming deputy chief executive in 2007 - and I am delighted he has agreed to continue with us in a part-time role.”
