UCLH wins award for best UK recruiter

UCLH has scooped the national Recruitment and Talent Management award from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development following a highly successful campaign to recruit and retain staff.

At a glamorous ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, the team picked up their award recognising the contribution that workforce strategy makes to the overall success of all UCLH achieves.

Workforce director Ben Morrin said: “Achieving super recruitment of great staff here has been a massive team effort. We now have a blueprint that not only retains the staff expertise that we already have but also takes into account future needs so that we have a plan that is truly fit for purpose. Our improved recruitment rates were the highest reported in the NHS in the last year and we are thrilled that our efforts have been recognised as superior to anything achieved by any other employer in the UK.”

Jodie Williams, head of recruitment and temporary staffing, said: “The key has been involving all groups in tackling the problem so that we found solutions that were integral to the business plan, supporting the organisation as a whole. Everyone should be extremely proud of their contributions and this amazing result.”

Since April 2015, the recruitment team filled more than 1,000 nursing and midwifery vacancies – a 60 per cent increase on the previous year – and reduced the agency  pay bill by £3.1 million for nursing and midwifery alone. Vacancies fell to 8% in March against a London average of 16%.  In the coming year we are focusing on remaining key posts and expect the overall vacancy level to fall to 5% by March 2017.
