The new centre, funded and developed by local commissioners, will introduce a new stream for patients with minor illness and minor injury, providing high quality primary care and reducing waiting times for patients coming to A&E. The service is a pilot that will run for six months.

For the next six months, the majority of ambulatory patients who present to A&E will be assessed by a GP who will either treat and discharge them, refer them to a GP in the UCC, or in more urgent cases refer them to an A&E colleague.

Dr Daniel Wallis, divisional clinical director for Emergency Services said: "We welcome this innovative partnership with local GPs to provide the most appropriate care for patients presenting to the Emergency Department and develop closer links with colleagues in primary care."

Dr John Horton, Chairman of Haverstock Health, said: "We are delighted to be working with UCLH on this exciting project and will hopefully be able to continue to develop integrated care."

This new development means that patients will be quickly assessed and treated by the service most appropriate to their needs.

The success of the project will be evaluated at the end of the six month pilot period when a decision about the way forward will be made.
