World Pressure Ulcer Prevention Day

19/11/2013 00:00
To support World Pressure Ulcer Prevention Day this week (November 21) UCLH staff will be holding events to raise awareness and provide information about how to eliminate pressure ulcers.

You can test your knowledge with pressure ulcer prevention and nutrition games; help celebrate the achievements of the best performing wards who have stayed pressure ulcer free and learn from experts. Several UCLH wards have made eliminating pressure ulcers their priority and they will be showcasing their work.

Reducing and eliminating pressure ulcers is a major priority for UCLH.

Nursing staff are the focus of a campaign that aims to eliminate all hospital acquired pressure ulcers for all inpatients.  Staff on T7 were recently recognised for reaching 100 days without a single patient acquiring a pressure ulcer (see picture below).

Katherine Fenton, UCLH chief nurse, said: “This is an ambitious target but one that is entirely achievable. It’s about good teamwork - from nurses providing the best possible care to support services ensuring the right pieces of equipment, including beds, mattresses and trolleys, are in the right place at the right time for every patient.”

Pressure ulcers can develop in just a few hours, they most commonly affect a patient’s bottom, heels or elbows and occur when pressure on the skin disrupts the flow of blood and starves the affected area of oxygen and nutrients. The skin surface breaks down causing an ulcer to form.

Not only are pressure ulcers incredibly painful and distressing, they also have an impact on continued clinical care and the associated costs.

From 10am until 4pm on November 21 there will be events at the:

University College Hospital atrium, 235 Euston Rd, NW1 2BU
National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Basil Samuel Outpatients, Queen Square, WC1N 3BG
Heart Hospital main reception, 16-18 Westmoreland St, W1G 8PH
