New films to help our patients with learning disabilities

20/06/2016 00:00
A new series of easy, clear-cut films co-produced by UCLH is being launched to help patients with learning disabilities. It coincides with Mencap’s national awareness week starting today.

Group of patients and staff

The films explain in a straightforward way what patients can expect when visiting a range of departments, including outpatient clinics, pre-assessment and surgery, maternity, the emergency department and Cancer Centre.

Go to www.uclh.nhs.uk/ld to view the films and read information leaflets designed to help patients with learning disabilities.

The project was made in collaboration with the Camden Advocacy Project and with support from UCLH Charity. Last year five films were released and these latest ones complete the series.

Clinical nurse specialist Tim Buck said: “Generally people with learning disabilities face health inequalities due to poor communication and misunderstandings and for many, a visit to hospital can be a confusing experience. Our films use clear and easy language and images to explain and help them understand what they can expect when they arrive for a hospital appointment.”

There are 1.5 million people with a learning disability in the UK, many of whom find it harder than others to learn, understand and communicate and they are twice as likely to be admitted to hospital each year as the general population. People with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) need full-time help with every aspect of their lives - including eating, drinking, washing, dressing and toileting.

Tim offers a range of training sessions, and also offers guidance on how to use the Mental Capacity Act to support patients with a learning disability to make decisions regarding their care and treatments.

If you would like to find out more about the services available for patients with learning disabilities Tim Buck and members of the Advocacy Project will be in the University College Hospital Atrium on Monday 20 June from 12:00 – 15:00 to mark the beginning of Mencap’s Learning Disability Week . Staff and visitors are welcome.
