University College Hospital is the safest hospital in the NHS

University College Hospital is the safest hospital in England after NHS England published new data on nurse staffing levels and systems of patient safety.

The hospital achieved a 114% score in safe staffing levels and was the only hospital in the NHS to perform above expectations in all six categories:

  • Patient safety reporting
  • Infection control and cleanliness
  • Patients assessed for blood clots
  • NHS England patient safety notices
  • Care Quality Commission national standards
  • Recommended by staff

All the other hospitals in the Trust performed excellently, details of which are published on the NHS Choices website, and the new safe staffing data is on our website.

UCLH chief executive Sir Robert Naylor said: “Congratulations and thanks to every member of staff who has played their part in helping us to earn this recognition of our commitment to quality and safety.

“I welcome the publication of this new data because transparency and openness are vital to improving performance. This new way of publishing information is a real step forward, as it brings together existing and new data in a new safety section on NHS Choices, and provides us with national benchmarks to measure our performance.

Meanwhile, a report produced by the Commonwealth Fund ranks the UK healthcare system as the best in the world. The Commonwealth Fund is a Washington-based foundation which is respected around the world for its analysis of the performance of different countries' health systems.

It examined performance internationally, comparing health systems that included France, Germany and the US. Detailed data was assessed from patients, doctors and the World Health Organisation. The report ranks the UK first overall, leading the way in safe, effective, patient centred care and efficiency.
