Is the Emergency Department the right place for you? 

The Emergency Department (ED) is for patients requiring emergency care for life-threatening conditions. Please use the service carefully so it can best support those with life-threatening and serious conditions.

UCLH does not have a stand-alone Urgent Treatment Centre (this is for minor injuries and illnesses such as cuts, minor burns, sprains, etc). This means that all patients coming to the Emergency Department at UCLH are seen by the ED team. Please consider whether your care needs to be provided by them.

Our Emergency Department may not be the most appropriate place for you to come to seek medical advice and help. If your condition is not an emergency there are alternative services that you can access across London and closer to home. For non-emergency problems (such as coughs, colds, sore throat, flu-like symptoms, diarrhoea and vomiting, ear aches and sprains) please consider other treatment options such as:

  • Self-treatment

    Minor ailments and injuries can often be treated at home, by a combination of over-the-counter medicine and plenty of rest. Keep a first aid kit and a well-stocked medicine cabinet (always keep medicines out of the reach of children). A basic first aid kit should contain these items.

  • Telephone 111

    NHS 111 call advisers are fully trained. They use a clinical assessment system that enables them to assess callers’ needs safely and effectively, and to direct them to the right NHS service. All advice provided is supported by experienced nurses.

  • Visit a pharmacist

    Visit your local pharmacist when you are suffering from a common health problem that does not require being seen by an emergency department nurse or doctor. Your pharmacist can give you confidential advice on illnesses and the medicines you need to treat them.

    In each local area pharmacies generally open in the evening and at weekends on a rota basis – check your local paper for details. In addition, some pharmacies regularly operate late-night opening.

  • Call your GP surgery

    Call your GP surgery if you need medical advice, examinations or a prescription.

    Make an appointment with your local GP when you have an illness of injury that will not go away.  Get the treatment you need at a convenient time and place and reduce the demand on emergency services.  Registering is free and means you can make an appointment with a doctor for medical advice, examinations and prescriptions.

    For repeat prescriptions, always contact your regular GP. In an emergency, a GP can also visit your home outside of normal opening hours – if you need this service, telephone your local surgery and follow the recorded instructions.

    Patients in Central and North West London are now able to see a GP seven days a week, thanks to a new service introduced by clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) in the area. To use this service, attend the GP practice closest to where you live: you can walk in, or call and book a same-day appointment. See details of participating practices.

  • Attend a Walk-in Centre

    Walk-in Centres provide fast and convenient access to healthcare advice and treatment for minor illnesses and injury. No appointment or GP registration is necessary. The nearest Walk-in Centre to UCLH is:

  • Need help for a specific condition?

    UCLH offers a wide range of specialist services. These services should not usually be accessed through the Emergency Department, except in very urgent cases, where referral will be provided.

  • Sexual health

    The Mortimer Market Centre, located close to University College Hospital, offers a wide range of sexual health services including:

      • Testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections
      • Rapid HIV testing (limited spaces available)
      • Information and advice on sexual health.

    The Centre is open from Monday to Friday. Appointments are normally required except for rapid HIV testing, which is offered on a walk-in basis.

  • Family planning

    If you require the morning-after pill we advise that you attend your nearest pharmacist and request this over the counter.

    The Family Planning Association offers helpline advice on family planning: call 0845 122 8690. The line is open 9am to 3pm Monday to Thursday, 9am to midday on Friday.

    Marie Stopes International offer a 24-hour advice line, as well as access to private sexual and reproductive healthcare services (in certain cases, NHS referrals can be made via your GP). Call 0845 300 8090.

  • Tropical diseases

    UCLH provides walk-in and Emergency Tropical Disease clinics at Mortimer Market for patients who have recently returned from abroad with a specific set of symptoms. The walk-in clinic is open 9-4 (Monday to Friday). Outside of these hours you can telephone 111 for advice. Please do not go to the Emergency Department within these hours for tropical diseases advice or treatment.

  • Eye care

    The Western Eye Hospital, located close to Marylebone station, provides a 24-hour eye accident and emergency service.

    Patients with a concern about their eyes can ring Moorfields Direct, a nurse-led telephone helpline, on 020 7566 2345, from 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday. Outside these hours, or in cases of emergency, Moorfields Hospital offers an accident and emergency service for patients needing eye care, based at its City Road site close to Old Street station.

  • Dental treatment

    The Emergency Department does not offer dental care. If your dental care needs are not urgent, please contact your local NHS dentist for treatment. You can find your nearest NHS dentist at NHS Choices.
