Professional background

I trained at St Mary's Hospital London (BSc Hons, MB BS Hons), and completed neurology training at Queen Square and the Royal Free Hospitals. I am Professor of Neurology at the Dementia Research Centre, UCL Institute of Neurology and Honorary Consultant Neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square. I run a busy cognitive disorders service with a particular emphasis on young onset and unusual dementias. I chair the Advisory Council of the International Society to Advance Alzheimer’s Research and Therapy; am UK representative to the European Academy of Neurology Dementia Panel; Vice-chair of the Association of British Neurology (ABN) Dementia Panel; and serve on the ABN Research Committee. I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), Fellow of the European Academy of Neurology (FEAN), Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), and a member of the Royal College of Physicians Neurology Specialist Certificate Examination Standard Setting Committee. In 2019 I was appointed as the inaugural Chief Medical Officer for Alzheimer’s Research UK, the UK’s largest dementia research charity.

Research interests

I lead a number of translational clinical research projects in the dementias, with particular interests in how clinical assessment, imaging and fluid (blood and CSF) biomarkers and genetics can be combined to improve differential diagnosis and identify pre-symptomatic Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. I lead Insight 46 a major neuroimaging study of the MRC National Survey of Health and Development British 1946 Birth Cohort, and also co-lead the mental ageing programme of the MRC Unit for Lifelong Health and Ageing.

Publications

I edited the Oxford Textbook of Cognitive Neurology and Dementia, have contribiuted more than ten book chapters and have published over 250 papers in the field of dementia and ageing (H-index 60) (tinyurl.com/jmspubmed and tinyurl.com/jmsscholar)
