Professional background

Mr Nishchay Mehta is a paediatric and adult consultant ear, nose and throat surgeon, appointed to the Royal National ENT Hospital with a specialist interest in otology and auditory implants.

He graduated from Guy's, King's and St Thomas' Medical school in 2005 with clinical science distinction in medicine and a first class BSc in physiology.

He became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2008. He undertook his higher surgical training with the London Post Graduate School of Surgery (North Thames Deanery) at Imperial, St Bartholomew's and the Royal London, Great Ormond Street and the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospitals. He gained a fellowship of the Royal College of surgeons in 2018.

He has been awarded Alice Maud Hall, TWJ Foundation and Royal Society of Medicine scholarships to study endoscopic ear surgery (Massuchussets Eye and Ear Infirmary, Boston, USA), cholesteatoma surgery with hearing and mastoid reconstruction (Radboud Medical Centre, Nijmeggan, Netherlands), and surgery for advanced cholesteatoma (Madras ENT Research Foundation, Chennai, India), respectively. He undertook the Graham Fraser Memorial fellowship in surgery for auditory implantation (Sydney, Australia).

Mr Mehta has a specialist interest in auditory implantation surgery, endoscopic ear surgery and local anaesthetic ear surgery.

Research interests

Mr Mehta won the Royal College of Surgeons research fellowship (2012) and was awarded the Wellcome Trust research grant (2013) to undertake his PhD on health informatics/datascience at UCL.

He is an BRC honorary clinical associate professor at the Ear Institute, UCL, where he supervises PhD and MSc students. His current research relates to the use of artificial intelligence in hearing loss, improving outcomes from cochlear implantation, sudden onset hearing loss, and ototoxicity (drug-related hearing loss).
