National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery

Neurology and neurosurgery, Hyper-acute stroke unit (HASU)

Professional background

In 1999, Professor Martin Brown was appointed as the foundation Professor of Stroke Medicine at the Institute of Neurology, University College London. He is also Consultant Neurologist at University College Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square. His main research contribution has been the organization of large multicenter clinical trials aimed at improving the prevention of stroke, particularly from carotid artery narrowing caused by atherosclerosis. His other interests include the development of NHS services and applications of magnetic resonance imaging in stroke. He has been involved in setting up three different stroke units, most recently the Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU) at University College London, and runs a specialized clinic for rare causes of stroke, including Moyamoya disease. He is a member of the Council of the Medical Defence Union and has also played a major role in establishing training in stroke medicine for junior doctors. He is a past President of the British Association of Stroke Physicians.
