Wig service

The wig and headwear service is available to all patients treated at UCLH who may experience hair loss as a result of their condition or treatment.

How does the referral process work?

Please ask your nurse or doctor to refer you. Once we receive your referral our adviser will call you to arrange an appointment.

Where will the appointment be held?

Your appointment will be held in the Macmillan Support and Information Service which is situated on the ground floor of the University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre, Huntley Street, London WC1E 6AG. If you are a patient on one of our wards our adviser will visit you there.

What happens during the first session?

We will show you our wig catalogues and hair colour samples and talk you through your options, including scarf tying and other headwear that is available. You can select up to three wigs from the catalogue which you can try on at the fitting session.

How long will I have to wait for my wig?

We may have one of your choices in stock but otherwise we will order the wigs from our supplier. Wigs are delivered within 10 days and we will call you once they have arrived to arrange an appointment for you to try them on. You can choose one of the three styles to keep.

Please note: It is important to us you leave with the wig you really want. You don’t have to select any of the three wigs we offer you. There are wig retail services available online and we have a short list of some suppliers that other patients have used. However, we are unable to recommend a specific supplier.

How much does a wig cost?

A wig costs £71.25 (correct for April 2018). You will need to pay for your chosen wig before collecting it.

You can receive your wig free of charge if you:

  • are under 16 years of age
  • are 16, 17 or 18 years of age in full-time education
  • have a valid War Pension exemption certificate and the items prescribed are for the accepted disablement
  • are named on a valid HC2 NHS low income scheme certificate
  • are named on a valid HC3 certificate for help with health costs
  • receive Income Support (IS) or Employment Support Allowance (ESA)
  • receive Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit)
  • receive income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA (IB))
  • are entitled to, or named on, a valid NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate
  • are fitted with the wig as an inpatient on the ward or in Day Care.

Please note: You may not automatically qualify for a free wig if you are over 60 years old. For more information please speak to the wig advisor.

We will explain all of the exemption criteria above at your first appointment.

Can you alter my wig for me?

We can provide a basic alteration service once you have purchased your wig. This includes alteration or adjustment of the wig cap and checking the overall fit. However, we don’t cut or trim wigs.

You cannot return the wig for a refund once it has been altered or worn.

If you have any questions, please phone the Macmillan Support and Information Service on 020 3447 8663 or pop in to see us.
