Wig service

The wig service is available to all patients treated at UCLH who have experienced hair loss as a result of their condition or treatment.

How does the referral process work?

Ask your CNS or doctor to refer you to the service. Once we receive your referral, you are free to drop into the Macmillan Support and Information Service situated on the ground floor of the University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre for wig and headwear advice.

A member of our team can also visit patients on the ward to provide headwear advice and wig fitting, as required.

What happens during the first session?

We will show you our wig catalogues and hair colour samples, and talk you through your options, including scarves and other headwear. You can select up to three wigs from the catalogue and we will order these for you to try at the fitting session.

How long will I have to wait for my wig?

Wigs are delivered within about 10 days. We will call you once they have arrived and arrange for you to come in and try them on. You can choose one of the three styles to keep.

Please note: Our no obligation policy means you do not have to select any of the three wigs if they are unsuitable for you.

How much does a wig cost?

A wig costs £66.70. You will need to pay for your chosen wig before collecting it.

Please note that from 1 April 2014, the cost of your wig is not included in the prescription exemption scheme.

You can receive your wig free of charge if you:

  • are under 16 years of age
  • are 16, 17 or 18 years of age in full-time education
  • have a valid War Pension exemption certificate and the items prescribed are for the accepted disablement
  • are named on a valid HC2 NHS low income scheme certificate
  • are named on a valid HC3 certificate for help with health costs
  • receive Income Support (IS) or Employment Support Allowance (ESA)
  • receive Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit)
  • receive income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA (IB))
  • are entitled to, or named on, a valid NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate
  • are fitted with the wig as an inpatient on the ward or in Day Care.

Please note: If you are over 60 years old, you are not automatically entitled to free wigs.

We will explain all of the exemption criteria above at your appointment.

Can you alter my wig for me?

We can provide a basic alteration service once you have purchased your wig. The service includes alteration or adjustment of the wig cap and checking the overall fit. However, we do not cut or trim wigs.
