The urgent referral clinic at the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital

The primary objective of the urgent referral clinic is to provide speedy access and effective care to all adult and paediatric patients aged above 2 years old with urgent ENT problems.

The urgent referral clinic is:

  • Not a walk-in clinic.
  • Only for 2 years and above paediatric patients

The clinic is designed to treat short term (usually less than a week), severe conditions such as those listed below:

  • Haemorrhage
    Nasal: non-arrested epistaxis episodes
Aural: due to trauma, surgery or infection
Throat: due to trauma or surgery
  • Acute infections
All acute infections pertaining to ear, nose and throat,
for  example, otitis externa, acute aural discharge,
acute tonsillitis, peri-tonsillar abscess and acute nasal discharge.
  • Acute pain - pertaining to all ENT regions
  • Non-acute airway obstruction
  • Acute vertigo
  • Foreign bodies suspected or proved

Non Urgent ENT conditions

The urgent referral clinic is unlikely to provide effective and satisfactory treatment on non-urgent ENT conditions. These conditions often require regular follow up and extensive investigation where RNTNE provides relevant dedicated outpatient clinical service. These non urgent ENT conditions include:

  • Long term vertigo, tinnitus, chronic sinusitis, long term hearing loss, chronic Eustachian tube dysfunction, chronic aural discharge and aural wax impaction

Suspected cancer

Patients with suspected malignancy should not be referred to urgent referral clinic. Instead, these patients should be referred to relevant clinic under the ‘2 week policy.’

The referral forms can be found at: My Health London.

Making an appointment

All patients will require a referral letter to attend the urgent referral clinic from their general practitioner, walk-in clinic or local accident and emergency department.
All patients must be registered with a General Practitioner.
