The Headache Service

The National Hospital Headache Service provides advice and treatment to patients referred for the management of headache disorders. Our ethos is to provide treatment in a timely fashion with an emphasis on community delivered shared care.

We also run multi-disciplinary clinics with the Neuro-otology service and Paediatric Neurology from Great Ormond Street Hospital. We work closely with our neurosurgical colleagues in managing secondary headache disorders and intractable headache disorders with neurostimulation.

Conditions treated:

  • migraine disorders
  • cluster headache
  • paroxysmal hemicrania
  • SUNA
  • hemicrania continua
  • paroxysmal headache disorders e.g. cough, exertional, hypnic, thunderclap headache
  • trigeminal neuralgia
  • secondary headache disorders e.g. headache related to changes in intracranial pressure, post-traumatic headache

Patient support services

All patients are supported by our clinical nurse specialists who run follow-up outpatient clinics, weekly telephone clinics and monthly botox clinics. Additionally they run the local nerve block, intravenous dihydroergotamine and caffeine admissions, while also liaising with the junior doctors on the Headache Service Firm who support the outpatients and inpatient services.
