Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Clinic

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Clinic was started by Sarah Creighton, Consultant Gynaecologist, in May 2002 to provide care and support for women who are experiencing problems as a result of female genital mutilation (FGM), to allow these women to discuss their health needs in a culturally sensitive and non-judgmental environment. This specialist service is staffed exclusively by a female team whose members understand the sensitivity and complexity of issues relating to FGM. Since its inception the clinic, which is jointly run by Sarah Creighton and Maligaye Bikoo, Clinical Nurse Specialist, has expanded to improve access to health care for women with FGM within the ethnic minority group. The clinic is held on Monday afternoons.

The FGM service offers:

  • Consultation clinic in the community at Women & Health in Camden
  • Consultation and procedure clinic at the hospital
  • Advocacy support
  • Counselling/psychology support
  • Assessment for pregnant women before childbirth
  • Choice of local or general anaesthetic for the ‘reversal’ procedure.
  • ‘One-stop’ clinic where a woman can have an assessment and the procedure for reversal at the same appointment if they wish
  • Referral to other services where clinically indicated
  • Collection of clinical information to improve our knowledge on the effects of FGM.
