Professional background

Stephen studied medicine at Cambridge University and Westminster Hospital Medical School, and trained in both infectious diseases and clinical microbiology. His interests in the immunology of parasites and infectious diseases allowed him to undertake research at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Medical Research Council Laboratories in The Gambia and at the Max Planck Institute for Immunobiology in Freiburg, Germany.

Much of his clinical training in infection was based in London, including periods at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, Chelsea & Westminster Hospital and St. Thomas' Hospital. He was appointed to consultant at University College London Hospitals NHS Trust in 2003.
