Patients who have IBS often experience varying symptoms that may include abdominal pain, bloating, bouts of diarrhoea and/or constipation. Symptoms tend to come and go and are often helped by medical treatments, dietary changes and psychological support.

The RLHIM Irritable Bowel Syndrome Service focuses on the following management approaches which are recommended by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence:

  • Nutrition & Dietetics
  • Hypnosis (hypnotherapy)
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Patients may be referred for other psychological interventions which may be helpful in the management of their symptoms. These may include Autogenic Training and Mindfulness.

The doctor or senior team member will make an initial assessment. Once the assessment is completed they will discuss which approaches are most helpful to enable you to manage your condition. This may include:

  • Dietary assessment and recommendations to ensure nutritional adequacy and possible symptom reduction
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Hypnosis
  • Autogenic Training
  • Mindfulness Meditation

Psychological support is offered in weekly sessions, either in a group or on an individual basis. Sessions focus on understanding symptoms, learning strategies to self-manage symptoms and reducing the impact the condition has on day-to-day life. Patients will be expected to use and practise these self-management skills between sessions. The number of sessions varies from six to twelve.

Patients are assessed by either a doctor or a psychological therapist. Other members of the team include a specialist dietician and therapists trained in psychological interventions.

The IBS service works with the UCLH gastroenterology unit to provide a high standard of care to patients diagnosed with IBS.
