The Eastman Dental Hospital Education Centre opened on June 1 2013, joining the Education & Training (Accredited) Assessment Centre for Dental Nurses and the School of Dental Hygiene & Dental Therapy to form the Eastman Dental Hospital Education Centre.
Through resource and good practice sharing, the new education department aims to offer high quality education for student Dental Care Professionals, both pre and post-registration, together with the provision of excellent patient care.
The Eastman Dental Hospital is the only postgraduate dental hospital in the United Kingdom. Dentists from all over the world come to the hospital to take advanced training. All forms of dental treatment are undertaken from the straightforward and simple treatment to the most advanced techniques in dentistry.
Dental Nurse Training has been established since 1950 and celebrated its 60th Anniversary in September 2010. All pre and post registration courses are accredited with the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses.
The School of Dental Hygiene opened on its present site in February 1985 after the closure of the School of Dental Hygiene at St. George’s Hospital, Tooting (associated with the Royal Dental Hospital). In 1992, the School was expanded and in September 1995, the School commenced its first two-year dental hygiene training programme in line with all other Schools of Dental Hygiene in the United Kingdom. In September 1998, the Eastman began to train dental therapists. In 2019 the school moved to a brand-new Dental Hospital at Huntley Street and has continued to provide education and training for both Dental Hygienists and Dental Therapists. More recently the school partnered with London Southbank University to deliver a BSc (Hons) in Dental Hygiene and BSc (hons) in Dental Therapy.
The Eastman Dental Hospital (EDH) is in the unique position of being the only postgraduate dental hospital in the UK. As well as postgraduate courses we offer hygiene, therapy and dental nursing programmes. As all members of the dental team were trained here, our courses provide an excellent opportunity to work alongside all members of the dental team while training and be part of the Eastman ethos. The Eastman has a world class reputation for providing excellent dental care, research and teaching, both in the UK and abroad.
The EDH has a number of specialist departments dealing with different aspects of dental care. Patients are referred by their dentist or doctor, for advanced and specialised treatment. Valuable research work is also carried out in a number of departments in an effort to achieve the very best outcomes for our patients.
The EDH has strong links with a number of teaching hospitals including Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, The Royal National Throat Nose Ear and Throat Hospital and The Royal Free Hospital. The Eastman Dental Hospital is part of University College London Hospitals (UCLH) NHS Foundation Trust.
As part of the EDH Training Centre for Dental Nurses offers a range of full and part time pre and post registration as well as other continual professional development courses for dental nurses, in line with the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses, the General Dental Council curriculum and Scope of Practice for dental nurses.
