This page is designed for parents/carers of children and young people who are scheduled to attend the paediatric audiology department. It outlines the various clinics your child may be seen in on the day of their appointment.

Your child may be seen in paediatric audiology if they have an appointment with an AVM or ENT consultant. A range of different hearing or balance assessments will be completed. Please allow at least 90 minutes when attending consultant-led appointments.

Your child’s hearing assessment is followed by a consultation with their doctor to discuss the results of any assessments completed in detail and to formulate an individual management plan.

Your child may be seen in paediatric audiology for the discussion, fitting or review of their hearing aids. Some of these appointments are held jointly with one of the specialist teachers of the deaf. Please allow at least 90 minutes when attending hearing aid appointments.

Various assessments are often completed during the appointment time; therefore we ask that you arrive on time and to bring your child’s hearing aids to every appointment (even if they are not working or are no longer in use).

Your child may be seen in paediatric audiology for earmould impression taking if they are a hearing aid user. Please allow at least 30 minutes when attending hearing aid appointments.

To prepare your child for impression taking, olive oil drops should be applied for several days prior to the appointment, please avoid using them on the day of the appointment.

Your child may be seen in paediatric audiology if they have upcoming ear, nose or throat surgery, or if they are under the care of an ENT consultant at a community hospital and require an assessment of their hearing. Please allow at least 30 minutes when attending hearing assessments.

Your child will be seen by an audiologist, who will complete a hearing assessment and record the results on your child’s digital chart, which will inform any further medical decisions.

Your child may be seen in paediatric audiology if they require regular monitoring of their hearing, such as children at risk of ototoxicity from their medication (e.g. children undergoing platinum-based chemotherapy or antibiotic treatments). Please allow at least 30 minutes when attending hearing assessments.

Your child will be seen by an audiologist, who will complete a hearing assessment used to monitor the health of your child’s inner ears and their hearing thresholds. This can help their consultant to inform further decisions about their treatment. Test results will be recorded on your child’s digital chart, which can be accessed by their consultant.
