Our vascular service has a major emphasis on endovascular (minimally invasive) treatments for vascular diseases, and this approach has largely replaced conventional open vascular surgery at UCLH.
Endovascular surgery is minimally invasive, relatively safe and highly cost-effective. Recovery times and hospital stays are much shorter than after open surgery. These procedures are carried out in our state-of-the-art 'hybrid' operating theatre. The UCLH service is part of the joint North Central London vascular programme, with its main hub at The Royal Free Hospital.
The service is provided in collaboration with a team of renowned expert vascular interventional radiologists, anaesthetists, acute stroke physicians and radiologists, haematologists, podiatrists, vascular scientists and specialist nursing.
Patients with carotid artery induced stroke symptoms are managed jointly with world-class specialists at the UCLH HASU. We offer state-of-the-art minimally invasive management of superficial and deep venous disease, including venous stenting. Blocked arteries are re-opened with minimally invasive angioplasty, stenting and laser techniques. Patients with diabetic foot disease are managed with endovascular techniques, in close collaboration with the podiatry team, vascular lab scientists and community nursing.
We provide vascular surgical support for other specialist services in UCLH and beyond, operating jointly with oncological, urological, gynaecological, ENT, spine, neurosurgical, general and orthopaedic surgical services especially where major blood vessels are involved.
We schedule appointments using a 6-week scheduling process. This means that you will be contacted with your appointment date approximately 6 weeks before it is due to take place.
This is because many appointments booked further in advance of 6 weeks are at risk of being cancelled or rescheduled, and this creates longer waiting times for all patients. 6-week scheduling helps us to reduce cancellations and improve patient experience.

MyChart is an app which can be downloaded onto your phone here. This is a patient portal which gives you the ability to view information about your care including appointments, letters and some test results. We may also send you questionnaires to complete to check in on your state of health. Please do not try to contact us via this app as we are currently unable to reply to these messages.
FAQs
To enable us to provide a quick response when you need it most we have developed these Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). We kindly ask you to read through these before contacting the advice line as you may find the answer to your question here. If, after reading these FAQs, you still need help with a specific question, please contact us and we will endeavour to respond.
If your query is the responsibility of another department such as pharmacy or changing a clinic appointment, or radiology appointment – we will not be able to help with this query.
We hope this will improve our ability to answer clinical questions more efficiently and provide you with a better service.
We have a central booking team who look after new patient referrals. You can contact them via 020 3447 9393 to chase the status of your referral.
We understand that there are times when you want to be seen sooner than the appointment we have given you. If this is the case, please email uclh.
We will put you onto a short notice cancellation list in case other patients cancel their appointments. Please note we cannot guarantee that we will be able to see you sooner but if this is possible, it may mean that we offer you a sooner appointment at short notice.
Please note that if you miss your appointment without informing us beforehand, you may receive a letter to say you have been discharged from our service. We normally allow patients to cancel an appointment twice before discharging patients back to the care of their GP. If this happens, you will be asked to arrange a new GP referral back into the service.
If you are signed up to the MyChart app, you should be able to see a copy of your clinic letter on there. If you need a letter from the doctors in charge of your care, please contact the admin team via uclh.
Please note that we are unable to provide a ‘sick note’ for your work or university. Only a GP can provide this.
To contact the administrators in the team, please contact uclh.
Blood tests and imaging reports are available to see via the MyChart app. Below show the timeframes in which you can expect to receive these results via the app:
- Blood tests – up to four weeks after you have had your blood test.
- Imaging reports – between six-eight weeks after your procedure.
- X-ray, MRI and other results - the majority of scan results can be discussed with you at your next clinic visit and do not require you to be contacted in the interim. The results of scans are reviewed once available and you will be contacted directly if there are any concerns. If there is a specific reason why you would like a copy of the results then please contact the admin team via uclh.

Anyone who has questions about the impact of medication on fertility or pregnancy can discuss this at your next clinic appointment or contact us via the advice line or email address. If you find out you are pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant, please keep us informed so we can update your records and plan when we should review you.
Prior to surgery taking place, you will receive a pre-assessment appointment where you will be informed of all the information you need for your specific procedure.
