University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) is one of the most  comprehensive NHS trusts in the UK, delivering acute and specialist healthcare services to a wide and diverse population across the country and internationally.

As both a leading teaching hospital and a hub for cutting-edge research, UCLH provides an exceptional environment for international doctors to develop and refine their clinical expertise.

UCLH offers two distinct opportunities for international visiting clinicians:

These placements provide international clinicians with a wide exposure to clinical procedures and practice without the necessity of acquiring GMC registration.

Candidates observe but do not assist; they are always under supervision and cannot carry out any clinical assessments, treat patients or take medical histories. Observerships generally last between six and 12 weeks.

There is some paperwork to complete, and a health check is required but the process is straightforward.  You will require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) which is a digital permission to stay in the UK for up to six months. Please visit the gov.uk website for more information.

Fees

UCLH charges a fee of £600 to £800 per person per week. The fee does not cover accommodation, travelling expenses or other living expenses.

Fellowships offer international clinicians a unique chance to develop their specialist skills in the stimulating and rigorous environment of a world-class hospital. Clinical Fellows practice and learn directly from experts in their fields. They shadow colleagues for the first four to six weeks and can then practice independently, holding clinics, doing procedures, attending Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings, and participating in any research available, subject to the overall supervision of their clinical supervisor. Doctors working in this way will have access to a high volume of activity and will operate as an integral part of the UCLH team. Their education will be supported throughout.

Clinical Fellowships generally last between 12 and 24 months.

A certificate of attendance is awarded at the end of a placement, verifying time spent as a Clinical Fellow at UCLH.

Requirements

Requirements may vary by specialty, but candidates must:

  • be fully qualified as doctors in their home country and be registered with an unblemished record with their national registration scheme
  • have spent at least two years post-qualification working in their specialism
  • have worked for the 12 months preceding their application
  • have the appropriate visa permitting them to work in the UK
  • be registered with the UK General Medical Council

We can support candidates with the visa and GMC registration processes.

Fees

UCLH charges a fee of £72,000 per person per year with home hospital paying the Fellow’s salary. The fee does not cover accommodation, travelling expenses or other living expenses.

Variation – Clinical Attachments

Slightly shorter versions of Fellowships, Clinical Attachments, can also be offered, with much the same documentation and processes as Fellowships.

Fees

UCLH charges a fee of £1,400 per person per week with home hospital paying the salary. The fee does not cover accommodation, travelling expenses or other living expenses.
