What to expect if you join a trial
Every trial has rules about who can and can’t take part, called eligibility criteria.
-
Inclusion criteria decide who can join. For example, the trial may only be available to people of a certain age or stage of cancer.
-
Exclusion criteria decide who can’t join. For example, we sometimes exclude pregnant women from drug trials to protect their unborn baby.
We’ll ask you questions and check your medical history to see if the trial is suitable for you.
Before you decide to take part, we will explain:
-
what the trial is trying to find out
-
what will happen to you during the trial
-
what the side effects are
-
all possible pros and cons of taking part
-
what tests and procedures you'll need
We’ll give you a leaflet with information about the trial to take home and read. You can discuss it with family and friends before deciding whether you want to take part.
Cancer Research UK has more information on what you should be told about the trial and examples of questions you can ask your research team.
If you choose to join a trial, we'll ask you to sign a consent form. This shows you understand the trial and agree to take part. Signing it does not affect your legal rights.
You may need extra checks such as scans or blood tests to make sure you're eligible and that the trial is safe for you. These only take place after you have signed the consent form.
When you join a trial, you get a code number instead of using your name on trial paperwork. Your name won't appear in any reports, and no one can identify you from the results. Your GP, healthcare team will know you’re in the trial and we’ll add it to your hospital notes.
While you’re on the trial, we’ll keep in touch to see how you’re feeling. We may also ask you to:
- have regular tests and check-ups
- give extra blood samples
- visit the hospital more often
- complete questionnaires or diaries.
What if I decide not to join a trial?
It’s completely fine If you decide not to take part in a trial. Your decision won't affect your care. You'll still get the best available treatment available for your cancer, and your medical team will continue to support you.
Can I leave a trial?
Yes, absolutely. You can withdraw from a trial at any time and don't need to give a reason. You'll then receive the standard treatment for your type and stage of cancer.
Can I get help with travel costs?
You might be able to claim back travel costs to hospital visits linked to this trial. We will tell you if this is possible when we ask you to sign the consent form.
