We offer an expert service for complex pulmonary embolic disease (PED) and follow up for all cases diagnosed with this condition at UCLH. The service principally involves the assessment and treatment-decision process for complex, challenging PED in the acute setting (e.g. large clot burden/pregnancy) and follow up of all patients diagnosed with PE after two months in an outpatient clinic setting. The service is interlinked with haematological experts, thoracic radiology and nuclear medicine, interventional radiology and experts in pulmonary hypertension (medical as well as surgical, via Royal Papworth Hospital).

  • Acute PED, including acute interventional strategies (invasive/non-invasive)
  • Diagnosis of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) and adequate, timely referral to local specialist centres (Royal Free Hospital, Royal Papworth Hospital)

There are around 200 cases of PED per year at UCLH, which we follow up.

Patient aftercare depends on investigation findings. Many patients will be suitable for management in the community by their GP, some will need further outpatient assessments (in person or by telephone) in this service and some will be referred on to other specialist services.

We also provide a more direct patient communication service through the UCLH MyCare interactive patient portal.
