The plasma exchange service at the National Hospital treats patients with autoimmune neurological diseases.
National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery
London, WC1N 3BG
Neurological conditions treated tends to be those with an autoantibody mediated aetiology, these include:
Stiff person syndrome
Autoimmune myelitis (inflammation of the spinal cord)
Autoimmune encephalitis and many others
We treat over 150 patients per year. Some people receive urgent treatment whilst an inpatient at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery whereas others have a planned (elective) care. Occasionally repeated treatments are required. We run a hotel pathway for some people who require regular plasma exchange where they can stay in a nearby hotel overnight and attend the hospital on a daily basis for their treatment, avoiding the need for overnight hospital stays.
