Proton Beam Therapy (PBT) is a form of radiotherapy used to treat certain types of cancers. It uses a high energy beam of protons rather than high energy X-rays to deliver a dose of radiotherapy. It directs the radiation treatment to where it is needed while minimising damage to surrounding tissue. Doctors may use proton beam therapy alone, or, they may combine it with external beam radiotherapy on a linear accelerator LINK, surgery, and/or chemotherapy.
The service, will also have a dedicated CT and MRI scanners which are used to plan the Proton Beam Therapy. The UCLH Proton Beam Therapy service also has an anaesthetics area for children who require a general anaesthetic for their treatment.
Proton beam Therapy is delivered on a machine called a gantry. The UCLH Proton Beam Therapy service is equipped with 4 Varian ‘pencil beam scanning’ ProBeam gantries and one cyclotron, which generates the Protons.
