Last month Chemotherapy Daycare and the Macmillan Support and Information Service at University College Hospital were shortlisted for a Patient Experience Network National Award. The teams were shortlisted in Cancer Patient Experience Survey (CPES) category for their work to improve information given to patients starting chemotherapy. The award recognises use of CPES data to drive and deliver measurable improvements in patient experience, where there is an emphasis on patient involvement.
The teams worked collaboratively, alongside people who had previously had cancer treatment, to develop an education group session and series of videos to prepare newly diagnosed patients to start chemotherapy. The education group session and videos cover information on what to expect on the day of having chemotherapy, and how to manage treatment side effects and the emotional impact of a cancer diagnosis. Since their introduction, the CPES data has shown an increase in patients being satisfied with the information they received before starting chemotherapy. This means patients are better prepared for their treatment, and they know what to expect and who to contact if they need more support.
The Macmillan Support and Information Service supports anyone affected by cancer, from pre-diagnosis onwards. The service offers emotional support, practical advice and information, workshops, creative groups, support groups, complementary therapies, psychological and emotional care, welfare and benefits advice, and wig and scarf tying advice.
