What is homecare?

At UCLH we are trying to improve patient experience by decreasing long waiting periods for collection of medication.

The hospital has engaged the services of external homecare companies to deliver your medicine to you.

The company will only deliver with your prior approval, directly to your home or work address, on a prearranged date. Where appropriate, homecare also provides nurses who come to your home to help you get started with some of your medication.

The service is managed by the pharmacy homecare team, along with your consultants, specialist nurses and pharmacists throughout the hospital.

The benefits of homecare include:

  • Not having to wait at the hospital pharmacy to collect your medicines
  • No need to carry heavy, bulky medicines home
  • Avoid travelling to hospital every month to collect your repeat medication
  • Cost-effective for the NHS

General enquiries

Other contact information

Please contact the Pharmacy Homecare team if you have less than 14 days’ supply and have not heard from your homecare provider or have been unable to get through to them. You can contact the pharmacy homecare team by the following means:

  • Office direct line: 0203 447 5650 (Monday to Friday – 9:00–17:00)
  • Via switchboard: 0203 456 7890 – Ext 75650

Homecare companies are not part of the NHS but are registered to provide medicines and medical treatments. The homecare provider we use will depend on which medicine or treatment you are receiving. The delivery service is discreet, safe and confidential.

When you register for the homecare service you will receive a welcome pack from the homecare service provider. This will explain who they are and what they do. They will also arrange a convenient time to deliver your medication. Please see contact details below if you need to re-schedule a delivery.

  1. During your hospital appointment with your doctor or specialist nurse, they may have a discussion with you about your eligibility to receive homecare for your medication.
  2. If you're eligible for homecare, your nurse will complete registration form and issue a homecare prescription.
  3. The University College Hospital Pharmacy Homecare team will arrange your registration and delivery of your homecare medication with a selected homecare provider.
  4. You will receive a 'Welcome call' from the homecare provider's team to acknowledge your registration and introduce the service. They will also schedule your first delivery.
  5. A few days before your treatment is due you will receive your first delivery and a 'Welcome pack' from your homecare provider.
  6. If your treatment requires administration by a nurse, you will receive a call from the homecare nurse to arrange a visit to administer your medication.
  7. You will receive a call from the homecare company before your next delivery is due to check if you have stock and rearrange a delivery.

If your medication needs to be stored in the refrigerator, please ensure it is stored between 2°C - 8°C. Do not freeze. It is a good idea to have a back-up plan should your refrigerator break such as a cool bag or a friendly neighbour who can safely store your medication until a solution is found.

Otherwise, if your medication should be stored at room temperature, please store safely and out of reach of children. Keep the medication away from heaters and radiators.

Check the expiry date on new and previously delivered medication and always use products with the shortest expiry date first. Your medication has been dispensed in accordance with your doctor's instructions.

Please take in accordance with the instructions on the label.

Please speak to the homecare coordinator or Homecare company to arrange a delivery four weeks prior to your holiday and ensure you have enough stock to cover your holiday, and up until your next scheduled delivery.

Contact the nursing team in the hospital to obtain a travel letter if you use an injectable medicine.
