About the Homecare delivery service

A homecare medicines service is a service that deliver hospital prescribed medicines directly to your home or other appropriate location (for example your workplace). This is done by an out-sourced service contracted by the hospital. Your hospital team is still fully responsible for the clinical aspects of your treatment.

Typically, the whole process from renewing your prescription to delivery of your medication can take approximately 6 – 8 weeks. It is important your blood test results are up to date and we have a copy of your results if you have done them at another hospital or your GP surgery as we do not have access to those records. If not sent to us, this can cause delays to your prescription being released.

Deliveries are made by a homecare delivery driver in a non-marked van to your home. You can also arrange to have your medicines delivered to a different address (for example your place of work or a friend or relative’s house). The driver will have proof of identification. You, or someone you know, will always need to sign for your medicine’s delivery. This ensures your medicines have arrived safely.

If your medication needs to be stored in the refrigerator, please ensure it is stored between 2°C – 8°C. Do not freeze. It is a good idea to have a back-up plan should your refrigerator break i.e. a cool bag or a friendly neighbour who can safely store your medication until a solution is found.

Otherwise, if your medication should be stored at room temperature please store safely and out of reach of children. Keep the medication away from heaters and radiators.

Check the expiry date on new and previously delivered medication and always use products with the shortest expiry date first. Your medication has been dispensed in accordance with your doctor's instructions. Please take in accordance with the instructions on the label.

Homecare companies have a contract which will ensure that they will only utilise your personal data to fulfil their home delivery service obligations. Your data is held on a secure system and is not shared with any third parties, other than those necessary to deliver our service to you.

What should I do if I am running out of my medication?

  1. Contact your homecare provider first in good time before you are due to run out as you may have an existing prescription with them which can be delivered.
  2. Ensure you are up to date with your blood tests (for blood tests done at UCLH please check MyCare app), and send any copies of results to us in good time.
  3. Contact the homecare co-ordinator to check if your prescription has been requested.

What should I do if my fridge breaks?

  1. Ensure you have an alternative place of storage as a back-up i.e. a cool bag or a friendly neighbour who can store in a refrigerator between 2°C – 8°C.
  2. Please contact the MS team for further advice on assessing if your medication is still safe to use.

It is important to ensure your medication is promptly stored in the refrigerator after it has been delivered and that you monitor the temperature on a regular basis. Wasted medications cost the NHS thousands of pounds every year.

What should I do if I am going on holiday?

  1. Please speak to the homecare co-ordinator in good time to arrange a delivery four weeks prior to your holiday and ensure you have enough stock to cover your holiday, and up until your next scheduled delivery.
  2. Contact the MS CNS team to obtain a travel letter if you use injectable treatment.

What should I do if I need to dispose of medication or sharp’s bin?

  1. Please contact the homecare company to arrange collection of any unused or unwanted medication including used sharp’s bins. Please do not dispose of them in household waste.
