EchinoMDM aims to support clinicians around the UK in the investigation and management of patients with suspected or confirmed echinococcosis or with other liver or lung parasites. We offer multidisciplinary care for patients at University College London Hospital (UCLH) and advisory services for patients in other hospitals through a hub and spoke model.
The multi-disciplinary team (MDT) consists of parasitologists, a radiologist, surgeons and a specialist nurse and is supported by comprehensive diagnostics and drug monitoring through the Department of Parasitology Laboratory. The MDT has close links to the UCLH Radiology Department for PAIR procedures, the UCLH Cardiothoracic Surgery department for cardiothoracic procedures and The Royal Free Hepatobiliary Department for hepatic surgery.
The MDM runs weekly on Tuesdays between 8am and 9am by invitation only. Clinicians from all specialties and from any NHS hospital are welcome to attend. A proforma must be completed before patients are discussed and a member of the referring team must attend the MDM to present the patient. All patients will be registered at UCLH for accurate documentation. Please read the Terms of Reference before referral.
- Suspected or confirmed echinococcosis
- Fascioliasis
- Additional liver or lung parasites
In most cases, patients remain under the care of the referring clinician with remote management advice offered through the MDT in a hub and spoke model. In specific cases, patient care may be transferred to UCLH if a patient requires some types of surgery or percutaneous procedures. Care at UCLH is supported by inpatient teams and a clinical nurse specialist. Please note, patient aftercare is dependent upon the nature of the condition.
