Professional background
Dr Maira Hameed is a consultant radiologist at UCLH working in both upper GI/HPB and lower GI Radiology teams. Her main clinical interests are in inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer, and she performs intestinal and endoanal ultrasound.
Maira studied medicine as a Heron Allen Scholar at Lady Margaret Hall and Green Templeton College, University of Oxford. She undertook Clinical Radiology training with later sub-specialist training in gastrointestinal and abdominal Radiology at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Royal Free Hospital and UCLH. She undertook a gastrointestinal Radiology fellowship at UCLH prior to taking up her consultant post in 2023.
She also works part time with UCL Centre for Medical Imaging and has a keen research interest in Inflammatory Bowel disease. She has obtained grants for studies predicting clinical outcomes in Crohn’s disease using MRI, and use of MRI and intestinal ultrasound in assessing treatment response in Crohn’s disease. She sits on the British Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (BSGAR) bowel ultrasound training group. Maira also has an interest in equity, diversity and inclusion in healthcare, and educational supervision, having obtained a postgraduate certificate in medical education (digital learning, supervision and assessment) and is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
