Professional background

As of the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid surgeons (BAETS) data published in 2019, Tarek is one of the UK’s highest volume thyroid surgeons for both malignant and benign disease.

Tarek graduated from medical school in 2001. Having passed with distinction in both surgical and medical specialities, he was accepted into a highly competitive general surgery residency programme. He ranked top of his class in the Masters of Surgery programme.

He completed his MD degree at University College London. The topic of his research was stem cells and organ regeneration. Following a successful thesis defence, he undertook a prestigious endocrine surgery fellowship at Oxford University Hospitals. He has been extensively trained both in Oxford and University College London Hospital to perform the full range of endocrine surgery procedures including thyroid cancer, parathyroid and adrenal operations. His general surgery work includes laparoscopic cholecystectomies and all kinds of hernia repairs.

He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and a full active member of the BAETS.

Tarek was appointed at University College London Hospital in capacity of consultant in 2014 and works closely with the endocrinologists, oncologists and radiologists to reach the best possible outcome for his patients.

He is an honorary associate professor at University College London, with a keen interest in teaching both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and is current surgery lead for year 4 UCL MS. He has a commitment to research and has lectured both nationally and internationally.
