Information alert

If you need a large print, audio, braille, easy-read, age-friendly or translated copy of this page, email the patient information team at uclh.patientinformation@nhs.net. We will do our best to meet your needs.

This service is for people who:

  1. Have travelled to a tropical country within the last 6 months.
  2. Are currently experiencing symptoms.
  3. Are over 16 years of age- unwell children should be taken to the nearest emergency department.

How to book an appointment?

If you meet all of the above criteria, please see our page Emergency walk-in clinic (tropical diseases) for booking information.

You will be asked to download our MyCare app and fill out a questionnaire prior to your telephone call, this must be completed. Please read Activate MyCare where you can find the sign-up information.

Walk-in telephone appointment

Once we have your information, if suitable, we will organise a telephone appointment to discuss your symptoms.

The call will come from an unknown number so please ensure your phone is configured to receive calls from unknown numbers. Please be aware that although we endeavour to call you at your appointment time, sometimes calls may be delayed.

What if I miss the call?

We will call more than once, but if we can't get through to you by phone, you will receive an email from uclh.htdadmin@nhs.net advising you that we called and providing information on next steps.

Please be aware we aim to see people as soon as possible, however, on busy days this process can take over four hours.

Walk-in face to face appointment

After your telephone appointment you may be asked to come into our clinic to see a doctor. The nurse will tell you when to come in during your telephone appointment. Our address is at the bottom of this page.

What happens after seeing the doctor?

Your doctor will decide whether you need any follow up, by telephone or face to face, or whether your results can be communicated to you in a letter.

MyCare is the most convenient way that you can access your letters and results. Please ensure this is set-up, see Activate MyCare where a guide can be found.

How long does it take to get results?

Routine bloods will usually take 24 – 48 hours, however more specialist tests may take three weeks or more. Please note, we are not able to provide updates on any unreleased results until three weeks after the bloods were taken.

Where do I provide urine/stool samples?

Whilst waiting for the doctor, you can provide samples requested by the nurse and drop them off in the sample room. This can be found next to the toilets by following the purple arrows. If you cannot produce a sample, you can drop them off another day or post it to our address located at the bottom of this page. Please ask us for advice on how to post your samples.

Consultant clinic

After being seen in our emergency walk-in clinic, if the doctor who sees you feels you need to be seen again, then they will ask the admin team to book you another appointment in one of our consultant clinics.

Discharge

If you don't need any follow up, you will receive a letter with you results and a plan for your GP. You can also access your results via the MyCare online portal.
