Professional background

Dr Nikhil Sharma is a consultant neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queens Square, London PI at the ION, UCL.

He qualified at the University of Liverpool and completed his general medical training at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queens Square, London.

In 2007 he was awarded a PhD by the University of Cambridge for work done with Professor Jean-Claude Baron.

His thesis used motor imagery and functional magnetic imaging (fMRI) to explore neuroplasticity and neurodegeneration in large-scale motor networks (funded by Brain Entry Scholarship, UK Stroke Association & Raymond and Beverly Sackler fellowships).

He completed his clinical training in neurology at Kings College Hospital, Hurstwood Park Neuroscience Centre and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. During this period he spent a number of years as a visiting post-doctoral fellow in Dr Leo Cohen’s laboratory at the National Institute of Health (NIH), Bethesda, USA (http://www.nih.gov). He was awarded the prestigious NRSA fellowship. His work used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) , functional (resting state fMRI) and structural imaging (diffusion tensor imaging) to better understand plasticity of the human motor system.

Research interests

His research (thesharmalab.com) brings together these skills to develop an innovative approach to better understand diseases of the motor system.

More specifically he combines ‘system-level’ neuroscience with machine learning to develop therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases. The group has a specific focus on the gut microbiome and brain imaging.
