National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery

Neuroimmunology, Neurology and neurosurgery

Professional background

Dr Michael Zandi is an Honorary Consultant Neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London, and UCLH NHS Trust. He is Honorary Senior Lecturer and Principal Investigator in the UCL Institute of Neurology Department of Molecular Neuroscience. He trained in medicine at Clare College, Cambridge University, and in neurology at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, London. His PhD in Cambridge was on biomarkers in neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus and NMDAR antibody encephalitis, with a focus on neuropsychiatric symptoms. He took part in the running of the Campath-1H (alemtuzumab) trials in multiple sclerosis with Professors Alasdair Coles and Alastair Compston. He has spent time in the laboratory of Professor Angela Vincent FRS at Oxford University from 2007. He is a co-Editor of Advances in Clinical Neuroscience and Rehabilitation.

Dr Zandi’s specialist interest is in the assessment and management of autoimmune encephalitis (including NMDAR antibody encephalitis and paraneoplastic neurological syndromes) and general central and peripheral neuroimmunology. He has expertise in the neurological complications of systemic inflammatory diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus. He sees patients with a range of symptoms, including cognitive, neuropsychiatric, movement disorders, autonomic and epileptic or paroxysmal disorders. He holds a once-weekly neuroimmunology and encephalitis clinic on Monday or Friday afternoons at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery Basil Samuels outpatient department where he sees patients with encephalitis and related conditions. If needed, his patients are admitted to the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery for treatments, or attend the day-case unit. He works closely with Dr Michael Lunn in the neuroimmunology and neuromuscular service. He works part-time in general and acute neurology at the Lister Hospital, East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. He provides neurology input to the UCLH systemic lupus erythematosus clinic with Professor David Isenberg, and to Great Ormond Street Hospital with Dr Cheryl Hemingway. Please contact the secretarial team above for more details if required for referrals.

Research interests

His research interests include understanding autoimmune encephalitis through a programme of basic science and translational research, including clinical trials, and in the development of clinical biomarkers in autoimmune encephalitis to speed up diagnosis and aid management. He is a principal investigator on research studies related to the study of autoimmunity in neurological disease at UCL in collaboration with Dr Michael Lunn and Prof Emma Morris, with support from the NIHR UCLH BRC, and an MRC funded randomised controlled trial for individuals with psychosis and autoantibodies in the absence of definite encephalitis (SINAPPS2, run through the Leonard Wolfson Experimental Neurology Centre). He has secured £2.2m in grant income as co-applicant or principal investigator since 2014.
