Professional background
Dr Surendranathan is an honorary consultant neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, where he runs a specialist movement disorders clinic. He has a particular interest in cognitive disorders associated with Parkinsonism, including dementia with Lewy bodies and Parkinson’s disease dementia. He is also a consultant neurologist at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust where he sees patients with all neurological disorders.
Dr Surendranathan qualified from the Barts and The London School of Medicine in 2003, having also completed an intercalated degree in Neuroscience at UCL. He was trained in general medicine at the Hammersmith, Guys and St Thomas’ and St Mary’s Hospital. His postgraduate training in Neurology was at Addenbrooke’s Hospital Cambridge, Queen’s Hospital, The Lister and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.
He was awarded a PhD in Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Cambridge for research investigating the role of Neuroinflammation in Lewy body dementia, as well as the clinical diagnosis and management of Parkinson’s disease dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies.
Dr Surendranathan has also trained as a solicitor and practiced for Linklaters LLP in their capital markets group.
Specialties
Research interests
Dr Surendranathan’s research is focused on improving the diagnosis and management of Lewy body disorders. He is also interested in inflammation in the pathogenesis of dementia with Lewy bodies and Parkinson’s disease dementia, particularly the role of microglia. He has previously worked on the Diamond Lewy study funded by the NIHR as well as the neuroimaging of inflammation in memory and other disorders study at the University of Cambridge.
